Abstract

The objective of this research were (1) to determine the distance learning used by lecturers of the English Language and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar in their online classrooms, (2) to determine the effectiveness of distance learning for students of the Department of English Language and Literature, UIN Alauddin Makassar from the perspective of Students and Lecturers, and (3) revealing areas of the teaching and learning process that need to be improved so that distance learning runs better. In this study, researchers used descriptive qualitative research using surveys to determine the effectiveness of distance learning for students of the Department of English Language and Literature at UIN Alauddin Makassar. There were 58 students from 120 second semester students for the 2020- 2021 academic year as the samples, taken from the Department of English Language and Literature at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The research result found that (1) students were given distance learning media, namely smartphones or laptops. Applications that need to be accessed by students in the e- learning process are LMS (Lentera), Whatsapp, and google classroom. However, they also need to have zoom meeting and google meeting apps to provide online meetings; (2) distance learning for students of the English Language and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar is quite effective, especially in terms of understanding, participation during the learning process, and motivation in doing assignments; and (3) there are 3 elements in the learning process that need to be improved, namely learning media, applications, and material delivery.
